Manny’s Back Tonight

Posted in Rant with tags , , , on July 3, 2009 by cuzitsmybday

Manny Ramirez is back and all of his owners will rejoice. Ethier owners should be rejoicing as well. The numbers just haven’t been there for Ethier the way they were when Manny was around. Obviously Manny’s return is going to mean more runsĀ  for Ethier and even more RBI’s.

Mannys return tonight should also mean the return of Ethiers numbers

Manny's return tonight should also mean the return of Ethier's numbers

Ethier certainly wasn’t slouching while Manny was gone, but his number did drop. I don’t own Manny on any teams, simply because I don’t like the guy.

I always knew there was a reason why he was wearing such bagging uniforms. I do, though, own Ethier and I’ll be looking forward to the increases in all categories.

The window might’ve passed to get in a trade for Ethier, but you still might be able to pull something off.

Are Wins Arbitrary?

Unless your pitching staff is loaded, picking up wins can be about as easy finding someone who’ll say something nice about Detroit. Okay, I actually like Detroit. It has character. I once saw a guy riding a rascal and giving it three-wheel motion down a sidewalk going about 15mph. That’s fast for a rascal and this guy was laid back on it.

What about pitching? Well, I try to go for wins every single week – like a moth to a flame. I go for wins and there goes my ERA and WHIP – every week.

Right now, I’m down two wins. About to be three as soon as Wandy gets his. It’ll be 5-2. What will I do about it? I’ll drop and pick up and drop and pick up as much as I can. I’ll roll with 4 pitchers each day and maybe, just maybe I’ll get one win.

So, why bother? It’s probably a better idea to just go with what you’ve got and pick up one or two guys during the week if the match-ups are good. Sometimes you’ll get wins, sometimes you won’t.

Who am I kidding? I’ve got to have 3 pitchers going everyday. It’s no fun if you don’t.

Cuddyer…!

Posted in Rant with tags , on May 24, 2009 by cuzitsmybday

I mean really, who was lucky enough to go up against a team that had Cuddyer on it? Seriously?

How annoying was that? I basically got beat by Michael Cuddyer. Unreal. Sickening. Depressing.

When Your Closers Get a Win…

Posted in Rant with tags , , , on May 10, 2009 by cuzitsmybday

There is nothing like the feeling you get when your closer gets a win in fantasy baseball. Okay, so it’s really not a special feeling…

But, when your closer gets a win, it feels good. It makes you bust out a sinister laugh. And when you get hit by a closer win from your opponent, well, a lot of words come to mind.

What’s great about them is that sometimes, it’s your closer’s bad pitching that gets him a win. He blows a save, and gets a win. Pretty good stuff, like Ryan Franklin did on Sunday. It looks like maybe, just maybe Brian Wilson is about to pull the same trick.

Wolfram-Alpha: a New Fantasy Baseball Tool

Posted in News, Rant with tags , , on May 5, 2009 by cuzitsmybday

You may not have even heard of Wolfram-Alpha, but you will know about it soon. It’s the scientist’s answer to Google and in my opinion it’s much needed. I’m pretty sick of using Google to search for things and turning up one pile of garbage after another. If you somehow happened to stumble onto this site through Google, then you know what I mean.

I’m not going to get into the details on what Wolfram-Alpha is, but it’s coming, and I know that it will be loaded with baseball stats and stats for every other major sport (maybe even the minor ones). Depending on how sortable the stats are and how everything works, this could be a great new tool for all of us fantasy sports enthusiasts.

Do some research and keep an eye out. It’s supposed to be launching soon. Google has answered with something of their own, but I’m going to check out this Wolfram-Alpha thing. Some have gone so far as to say that it will change the internet forever. Well, that’s going a little too far because we all know what the internet is really for and I don’t see that changing any time soon…but maybe it’ll change it a little bit and head the net back in the direction it was intended for in the first place.

The Luck of it All

Posted in Rant with tags , , on May 4, 2009 by cuzitsmybday

You know, sometimes you do all the research you can and you spend your free time digging deep into split stats to figure out who to start or pick up, and at the end of the day…the numbers really didn’t mean a thing – you lost.

One of the hardest stats to determine is the Wins category. They are pretty arbitrary, but still really difficult to not make an attempt to go after. I think I’m going to totally ignore wins and just see what happens at the end of the day.

It seemed like my entire team hit a slump this week and I couldn’t get anything out of my starting pitchers.

So, what’s the lesson? The lesson is that there is no lesson to be learned. It’s a long season and like any player, except for Albert Pujols, it’s going to have it’s share of ups and downs.

Streaming Pitchers

Posted in Rant, Strategy with tags , on May 3, 2009 by cuzitsmybday

I like to stream pitchers. I like to keep a constant flow of starters coming in and out on a daily basis and I like using guys that nobody’s heard of.

If you haven’t pitched in the bigs yet, but you start today…you’re probably going to throw on my teams.

Does this work? Yes. Sometimes. Sometimes it fails, miserably. Is it fun? Yes.

Does it piss off people? I think so. I think it’s frowned down upon by a lot of fantasy players. I’m not really sure why…but I think it’s a jealousy thing. They hate seeing their opponent running at them four pitchers deep every single day.

With a little research you can actually get some of these no-name guys in spots that will statistically work out for you. Today I’m using Jakabasaukus for the Mariners. He’s at home against Oakland and the Athletics are terrible on the road. I”m not really banking on the pitcher being good, so much as I am on Oakland being Oakland.

If you’re in a Head-to-Head league you’ll often get to a point where it’s time to throw the towel in on ERA or WHIP and that’s the best time to start streaming. You don’t need to do it all week, just Saturday or Sunday.
